As promised (or threatened), soon I will be going into the studio to record a few Wiles-Orton tunes written around the time we arrived in Northern California hot off our Double Shot success! This one was a reggae/rock tune conceived about not wanting to get old… but preferable considering the alternative. Without giving too much away, some of the groups out here did not want to do this song because of the second verse. They thought it was a bash on gay people because it had the word “fairy” in it. But, of course, my New Wave band, The Secrets, eagerly took it up and performed it live in various Bay Area venues (Berkeley Square and Kabuki Theater to name a couple) early in the ’80’s. – Mick Orton
Running Away
(Wiles-Orton)
I don’t want to reach a ripe old age,
But I don’t think I want to die.
I know that I’m not getting any younger.
And I don’t want to say goodbye.
I guess I’m a lot like Peter Pan,
The fact is I just won’t grow up.
And though I tell myself I’m not a fairy,
I still wish I could make time stop.
I don’t want to get old, I don’t have to be told,
Over and over and over again, I’ll be much wiser by then.
Oh, I’m runnin’ away, Yes, I’m running away.
I feel so helpless, I’m running away.
Verse (Guitar solo)
Chorus:
I don’t want to reach a ripe old age,
But I don’t think I want to die.
I know that I’m not getting any younger.
And I don’t want to say goodbye.
(fade on goodbye… I said goodbye… oh, I said it again!)
