Silver Laughter’s Mick Orton LOVES His Hofner Bass

Old '60's Hofner

I wanted to do a shout out to Hofner about the quality of their latest line of “economy” violin basses. The one I have stays in tune beautifully even after days of rehearsing… which I have been doing frantically since we finally figured out our set list for the induction ceremony!

Paul McCartney plays a vintage 500/1. I have a 60’s bass in that same model which I’ve written about before. However, the electronics are shot, and the low E does not sound true.

The new one which I purchased late last year is called an Ignition violin bass. There are some slight differences, but over all, it’s the same bass.

Nowadays, Hofner instruments are made in China, for the most part. And the quality that comes out of there with the attention to detail is magnificent. Compare the vintage Hofner (like my original) at almost $3,000 to the one I am now using which cost just under $500!

Why do I choose Hofner? Because the short scale fits my performing needs. It’s light hanging on my neck, but still sounds solid.
